However, the assumption that grass strips are universally cheaper than paved runways does not always hold true. The cheapest grass fields on this list (North Coates, Fenland, Netherthorpe — all £5–£10) undercut most paved ones outright, but the cheapest paved fields (Sleap and Dunkeswell at £15) also beat plenty of grass strips further down the table. Surface alone doesn't predict the fee — Turweston, Cotswold and Sywell, all paved, sit at a fairly consistent £20, while grass fields span the entire range from £5 to £30.

Infrastructure and operating costs

Runway fees reflect aerodrome maintenance overheads:

  • Paved Runways: Maintaining asphalt surfaces requires resurfacing cycles every 15 to 20 years, drainage interceptors, and electrical runway edge lighting maintenance.
  • Grass Runways: Gang mowers, rolling, and turf aeration keep capital costs lower, though wet winter weather often restricts operations.

Secondary costs of grass operations

While smaller grass strips offer low £10.00 landing fees, regular grass operations introduce specific maintenance considerations:

1. Propeller leading-edge erosion

On unpaved surfaces, engine run-ups can draw loose pebbles and grit into the propeller arc. Dressing propeller nicks with an engineer's file is routine; replacing a severely pitted blade can cost upwards of £2,500. Performing magneto checks on smooth turf rather than gravel taxiways protects the blades.

2. Mud accumulation in wheel fairings

Operating from wet turf packs mud inside wheel spats. Many syndicate owners remove wheel spats during the winter season. Removing spats decreases cruise speed by 3 to 4 knots, slightly increasing fuel burn on longer cross-country legs.

3. Winter waterlogging

Clay-based grass aerodromes face seasonal closures during prolonged UK rain. Basing an aircraft at a grass strip may require repositioning to a hard runway or hiring club aircraft during winter months to maintain flying currency.
